When Sonny Rollins stepped into the studio on June 22, 1956, to record Saxophone Colossus, he was already an established name in jazz, having played with the renowned Max Roach-Clifford Brown Quintet—hence Max Roach’s presence on drums. At just 26, Rollins was gaining recognition, but this album truly launched him into stardom. The LP features his first take on the classic "Saint Thomas" and a memorable rendition of "Moritat/Mack the Knife."
