The Selecter played a major role in the late 70s ska revival and stood out as one of the few bands with a diverse lineup. Frontwoman Pauline Black tackled topics like sexism, racism, and social issues in her lyrics. Their first release was the AA side of The Specials’ single ‘Gangsters’ in 1979, initially featuring just Neol Davies and John Bradbury before the full band came together later that year. Their next single, ‘On My Radio,’ climbed to No. 6 on the UK charts. Their debut album, Too Much Pressure, dropped in February 1980 and hit No. 5, featuring hits like ‘Three Minute Hero’ and ‘Missing Words.’
